Does Vitamin C Affect Gum Health?

It’s certainly true that adequate vitamin C is good for your gums. In fact, vitamin C influences gums in a couple of different ways.

VITAMIN C IS NECESSARY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTHY GUM TISSUE. Collagen is an important substance in cell development, and vitamin C is essential to collagen production. Gum tissue is fragile and becomes inflamed easily, so collagen is necessary to help keep the gums healthy.

VITAMIN C MAY BOOSTTHE IMMUNE SYSTEM. Our mouths are one of the main areas where we are exposed to bacteria. Adequate vitamin C can help keep the immune system in condition to fight infection.

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT LACK OF VITAMIN C CAN HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON GUM HEALTH. Researchers have found an increase in gingivitis in those who have a low intake of vitamin C.  In fact, bleeding gums are a symptom of scurvy, which is directly linked to vitamin C deficiency
